Roaming Ronda

I went through a Hemingway phase as a teen, and eventually wrote a paper about him during my senior year of high school. I vaguely remember what I wrote about, but perfectly recall being entranced by the deep feelings he had for Spain and Spanish life in his books. I remember most of his works as being somber and very observant, which made for a touching portrayal of what Spanish life was like for an expat in the 1920s and 30s.

In his novel, “Death in the Afternoon”, Hemingway writes, “There is one town…to see your first bullfight in, if you are only going to see one, and that is Ronda. There is where you should go if you ever go to Spain on a honeymoon or if you ever bolt with anyone. The entire town and as far as you can see in any direction is romantic background.”

So off we went to Ronda.

In terms of sightseeing, Ronda is best known for it’s gorgeous cliffs overlooking valleys and rolling mountains.

Part of the beautiful trail that leads you around the edge of these cliffs is called “Hemingway’s Path”.

If you continue on, you’ll come across one of Ronda’s old bridges, built in the 1700s, known as Puente Nuevo, or the “New Bridge”.

We did find the beauty of Ronda to be very romantic, and its hikes at the bottom of the ravine some of the most breathtaking. Needless to say, D-Man and I intend to return, preferably for an overnight stay.

If you’re looking to read about Spain in Hemingway’s works, I recommend “The Sun Also Rises” (also known as “Fiesta”), and “Death in the Afternoon”.

Have books or specific authors ever enticed you to see, or dream, of faraway places?

    • We really did! I kept looking at the beautiful cliffs and thinking about how gorgeous it’d look in the evening, and how much more magical it must feel to walk around Ronda at nighttime. *sigh*

    • Yes, I loved reading your Hemingway post! I love the term “alligator pear” for an avocado, I might just call them that from now on. :) I’ve wanted to re-read “The Sun Also Rises” for a couple of years now (that’s the one that really stuck with me), but there are sooo many other books I haven’t read that I intend to. Oh, I should have studied to be a book critic as well…turn one of my many passions into an nice career. ;) Really, sometimes I feel like I could go on and on!

  1. Amazing photos Michelle :) Paulo Coelho’s works have made me want to travel through Spain and through the dessert of North Africa (as in The Alchemist). Alhambra by Colin Da Silva made me want to go to Andalusia too *sigh* Now I’m all nostalgic ;)

    • Azra, I love The Alchemist. There’s a quote in it that’s very touching for me: “When you really want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.” I haven’t read “Alhambra” by Colin Da Silva, but I’ve looked it up and it sounds like a great book!! I’ll see if I can get a hold of it on my Kindle. :)

    • I agree! I love rocky places, too, though sometimes I get vertigo (it happened once while I was climbing up a rocky, steep trail in Yosemite). Though the trails in Ronda had nice rocky wall-fences and other pretty barriers from the ravines below. :)

  2. What breathtaking-heart-melting-sights you captured there! Love love love the pictures! I need to start creating a list of the places I would love to see, such as this one, as suggested by MY fav author!… YOU! ;-)

    • I would love to see your wishlist of places to see!! You saw a lot of Spain before I ever set foot here, and never warned me of how it could steal your heart! :)

  3. I used to live just around the corner from Ronda in a different white village. It’s definitely a crowd pleaser. When you’re back save up some €s to eat at one of the fancy restaurants past the Puente Nuevo (cross the bridge and go up the first street on the right). Excellent food with an excellent view!

    • Oooh. D-Man and I noticed a nice restaurant right on the cliffs, but I can’t remember noticing any past Puente Nuevo. We ended up eating at a lovely little hole in the wall with terrific food (we literally made our way over to it by sense of smell!), but I’ll keep an eye out next time. An excellent view along with our meal would be great.

  4. That bridge is stunning!
I always remember one book that just makes me want to travel: You shall know our velocity by Dave Eggers. Not about one particular place (as the guys in this book travel to multiple ones), but it really triggers to just go out and travel (and not always take it too seriously).
    What a lovely day out!
    Emiel

    • Emiel, I love Eggers!! I read his memoir, “A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius” when I was in high school. I’m looking forward to reading this other one, thank you for putting it out there!
There was definitely a nice, sunny sky the day we went to Ronda, but it was very windy, especially along the cliffs. It seems like a great place to go in Spring and Summer, I’m already aching to go back. :)
